Abstract

India's payment system landscape underwent a drastic shift, as "contactless" methods of financial transactions took place during the COVID-19 pandemic. Digital means of payment saw surge in adaptation that are now easier than ever. UPI or Unified Payments Interface led by The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) provided real-time, simple, and highly available ways to make digital payments. The objective of this research is measuring the growth, impact, and behavioral transition of UPI between the years 2020 and 2025.
The research relies on secondary data reported from the NPCI, RBI, MeitY, industry reports, and academic studies. Data points of interest for this research include: Monthly transaction volumes (both volume and value), user penetration, merchant adoption, availability on Government digital service platforms, and demographic reach of UPI adopters. We have also placed a heavy and intentional emphasis on measuring the behavioral change from cash-based transactions to mobile based digital payments. Some of the key drivers of this behavior change include mobile phones and internet availability, unique digital literacy programs, and the leadership of government in promoting and encouraging UPI adoption to make digital payments. The research also examines the differences in UPI adoption for rural, semi-urban and urban populations, as well as infrastructure and social economic factors. It also acknowledges the influence of governmental policies and initiatives, such as Digital India, Jan Dhan Yojana and bigger policies regarding financial inclusion; as well as factors like safety concerns, transaction failure, and resistance to digitally adopting UPI.Further, it discusses issues such as UPI having a role in formalizing the economy by providing more granular tracking of transactions, reducing cash reliance, and providing granularity of financial data for policymakers. In addition, it discusses the evolution of UPI for E-commerce, utility payments, loan repayments, and offline merchant services.
To sum up, this research demonstrates that UPI has transformed India's payments landscape and has contributed to financial inclusion that has enabled a more digitally emplaced and cash-light economy, as well as presents some barriers and opportunities to sustainable digitization.
