Abstract

The smart cities are inclusive of facilities in sustainable transportation, clean energy utilization, and reduction of carbon emissions. Optimized way of use renewable energy systems such as solar, wind, and energy efficient and recovery mechanisms initiates the necessity of exploring the role of smart technology in renewable energy optimization. Traditionally, buildings have been known to use the heating and cooling systems without heat recovery, and non-optimized roof-top solar photovoltaic systems. Few researchers have explored the concepts of bi-directional power flow to re-feed the power grids with power generated at the customers end. Similarly, battery storage re-feeds and re-shapes the way power is being utilized in the modern power systems. This paper is exploring consequences associated with renewable energy utilization known from existing literature. Available research papers developed in past couple of years were utilized to understand relationship of smart technologies with renewable energy integration. A case study of application in the rural area for the power resilient system from renewable energy and electric vehicle sharing improved the literature application. Such smart technologies were: building energy management, heat recovery, electric vehicle charging, and renewable energy systems. Limitations of the study were: availability of readily available research papers, and user tools and techniques.
