Abstract

The rapid global growth of data centres, essential for powering digital infrastructure, has brought a significant and often overlooked environmental issue: water consumption. While the industry mainly aims to cut energy use, the increasing need for water for cooling, particularly in large data centres, is putting serious pressure on local water supplies. This article examines the operations of data centres, focusing on the cooling methods that lead to their high-water usage, such as evaporative and adiabatic systems. Using recent data and case studies from places like the United States, India, and the Netherlands, the study shows how data centres increase water stress in already vulnerable areas. The analysis points out that, while companies like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon have set net-positive water goals, their approaches often depend on inconsistent metrics and disconnected local replenishment efforts, raising doubts about their effectiveness. Community pushback, legal issues, and new regulations highlight the social and political impacts of industrial water use in cities and surrounding areas. The article calls for location-based accountability, independent audits, and standardized reporting to ensure that corporate sustainability promises lead to real environmental gains. By combining technological progress with responsible water management, the data centre industry can play a significant role in promoting climate resilience and fairness in resource distribution. This paper encourages the inclusion of water-conscious practices in the planning of digital infrastructure to reduce long-term ecological and social risks tied to uncontrolled water use.
