Abstract

Financial risk tolerance (FRT) is a critical determinant of investment behavior, as it influences the choice of financial instruments, portfolio diversification, and long-term wealth creation. This study investigates the impact of demographic factors on the financial risk tolerance of individual investors, focusing on variables such as age, gender, income, education, and marital status. The research is conducted within the Indian context, where growing financial inclusion, technological adoption, and changing socio-economic conditions are reshaping investment patterns. Primary data was collected through a structured questionnaire administered to individual investors across diverse demographic categories. The findings reveal significant differences in financial risk tolerance based on gender, marital status, and income. Men were found to be greater risk-takers compared to women, highlighting gender-based differences in investment attitudes. Similarly, single individuals exhibited higher levels of risk tolerance compared to their married counterparts, suggesting that family responsibilities moderate risk-taking behavior. Income showed a positive relationship with FRT, indicating that higher earnings enhance an investor’s capacity and willingness to assume financial risks. Interestingly, age and education were found to be insignificant in explaining variations in FRT, contrary to several prior studies that suggested their strong influence. The study contributes to behavioral finance literature by providing empirical evidence from India and emphasizes the importance of tailoring financial advisory services to demographic profiles.
