Abstract

The accelerated pace of urbanization has exerted immense pressure on existing city infrastructures, compelling urban planners and governments to seek innovative and sustainable solutions. The emergence of Smart Cities aims to address this challenge by integrating technology with urban planning to improve the quality of life, optimize resource usage, and enhance governance mechanisms. At the core of this transformation is the Internet of Things (IoT), a dynamic ecosystem of interconnected devices, sensors, actuators, and communication technologies that facilitate real-time data collection, monitoring, and intelligent decision-making. The study concludes by discussing future directions for research and development, including the integration of emerging technologies like 5G, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Blockchain, and Digital Twins to enhance the performance and reliability of IoT systems in smart cities. The findings of this paper aim to contribute to the academic discourse and offer practical insights for policymakers, urban planners, and technology developers seeking to harness IoT for sustainable urban transformation.
