The Charkha, a simple spinning wheel, has held deep symbolic and socio-economic significance in Indian history. It emerged as a symbol of self-reliance, non-violence, and resistance during the freedom struggle, embodying the dignity of labor and the strength of indigenous production against colonial exploitation. Historically, the Charkha played a crucial role in promoting rural livelihoods, sustaining cottage industries, empowering women, and fostering economic independence in villages. Even twenty-five years ago, it retained socio-economic importance, particularly in rural India, where spinning and weaving contributed to household income, preserved traditional skills, and supported community resilience. In the present context, however, industrialization, globalization, and mechanized textile production have reduced its practical utility, shifting its role from a livelihood necessity to a cultural and symbolic artifact. Yet, the Charkha continues to carry relevance as an emblem of sustainability, eco-friendly production, and cultural preservation. A comparative understanding of its past and present reveals both continuity and transformation: while its economic contribution has diminished, its symbolic value and potential for revival through Khadi institutions, government support, and sustainable development initiatives remain significant. This study aims to bridge historical and contemporary perspectives by analyzing the socio-economic contributions of the Charkha across time. It underlines the need to revisit traditional practices in light of present-day challenges such as rural distress, unemployment, and environmental degradation. Ultimately, the Charkha stands not only as a reminder of India’s struggle for self-reliance but also as a potential pathway toward inclusive growth and eco-conscious development.
