The rapid development of artificial intelligence has led to the emergence of AI-empowered digital afterlife devices that allow you to talk with virtual representations of the deceased. This article, "Simulating the Dead: Ethical, Psychological, and Technical Perspectives on AI-Powered Digital Afterlife" explores the implications of these technologies from the perspectives of ethics, psychology, and computer science. In terms of ethics, these systems can pose challenges to the concepts of consent, privacy, and posthumous identity, as well as presenting a moral responsibility to developers and users. In terms of psychology, the understanding of grief, emotional health and attachment could all be influenced by the experience of an AI mediation of interaction with simulated dead. While a person may find comfort in the interaction, there is a risk of circumventing proper attachment and process of grief, as well as relying on the simulation for prolonged periods of time. Finally, from a computer science perspective, we discuss the components that make the simulation possible such as architecture, machine-learned algorithms, natural language processing and data sources used for simulated realistic representations. Additionally, we highlight challenges faced in machine-learning and natural language processing that are relevant to the quality of the simulation, including accuracy, bias, and data security. After bringing together thinking across ethics, psychology, and computer science, the aim is to create useful guidelines for responsible design, deployment, and regulation of AI-based digital afterlife technologies. In closing, we discuss the need to take a multidisciplinary approach to balance innovation with human dignity and respect for society as a whole so that the simulation of the dead provides useful experiences and is ethical and pragmatic.
