In the age of artificial intelligence, personalized content delivery through recommendation systems (RS) has become an integral part of digital life. From the videos people watch on YouTube and the movies they stream on Netflix to the productrts they buy on Amazon and the posts they see on Instagram or TikTok , algorithm-driven suggestions influence a majority of online decisions. These AI-powered systems promise enhanced convenience and user satisfaction by predicting and delivering content that aligns with individual preferences and behaviours. However, this increasing dependence on algorithmic curation introduces critical ethical and psychological concerns regarding the erosion of human autonomy.
This paper also presents a conceptual framework for measuring digital autonomy and proposes a hypothetical tool—referred to as the User Autonomy Monitoring System (UAMS)—that could help users become aware of and regain control over their interactions with recommendation systems. The proposed solution emphasizes transparency, explainability, and user control, offering a path forward for designing AI systems that prioritize ethical considerations and protect human dignity.
