Abstract

This research evaluates the understanding and awareness of human trafficking among young people in Maharashtra, focusing on the age group 18–25. Using a descriptive research approach, data were collected from 71 respondents via an online survey. The questions addressed knowledge of trafficking definitions, ability to identify warning signs, sources of information, and willingness to seek help or report cases. Results indicate that although most respondents have heard of human trafficking and recognize it as a serious issue, less than 20% can identify multiple warning signs or specify any helpline numbers. Social media and news are the main information sources, while school-based awareness programs are rarely reported as a source. The findings also show that most youth feel ill-prepared to take action if confronted with trafficking situations, citing lack of information and uncertainty about reporting as major obstacles. The results highlight a substantial gap between basic awareness and practical prevention skills. This study recommends integrating trafficking education into school and college curricula, improving access to reporting channels, and developing digital campaigns suited to youth interests. Addressing these gaps can strengthen prevention efforts and empower youth to recognize, resist, and report trafficking effectively in their communities.
