Abstract

Drunk driving remains a significant contributor to road traffic accidents and fatalities in India, posing serious public health and safety challenges. Despite existing legal frameworks such as the Motor Vehicles Act and enforcement mechanisms, alcohol-impaired driving continues due to socio-cultural factors, inconsistent enforcement, and limited public awareness. This paper critically evaluates prevention methods in the Indian context, including legislative measures like permissible blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limits, penalties, and technological interventions such as ignition interlock devices. It also examines the impact of public awareness campaigns and community-based initiatives aimed at altering attitudes towards drunk driving. Analysis of national traffic data and case studies reveals that multi-faceted strategies integrating strict law enforcement, technology adoption, and sustained educational outreach are essential for effectively reducing alcohol-related accidents in India. The study highlights the need for enhanced coordination between government agencies, civil society, and the public to foster responsible drinking behaviors and improve road safety outcomes.
