Abstract

Women’s empowerment forms the cornerstone of gender equality and social justice in modern India. This research critically examines the legal frameworks that safeguard and promote women’s rights, focusing on their effectiveness in ensuring social, economic, and political empowerment. The study analyzes key legislations such as the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act (2005), the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act (2013), and the Hindu Succession (Amendment) Act (2005), alongside India’s commitments under international conventions like CEDAW. Using a qualitative methodology that includes literature review, case analysis, and expert perspectives, the research highlights the persistent gap between law and implementation caused by cultural norms, lack of awareness, and institutional inefficiencies. It further explores how these barriers hinder women’s access to justice and equality. The paper concludes by recommending stronger law enforcement, gender sensitization, legal awareness initiatives, and socio-economic integration to ensure that legal reforms translate into real empowerment for women across India.
