Herbal plants are an important source of natural medicines and have been used for healing since ancient times. One such plant is Ocimum sanctum, commonly known as Tulsi. In Indian culture, Tulsi is considered holy and is also used in religious rituals. The name “Tulsi” comes from a Sanskrit word meaning “the incomparable one.”
Tulsi is not only used in Ayurvedic medicine but also in other traditional systems like Greek, Roman, and Unani medicine. The plant is rich in natural chemicals found in its roots, stem, fruits, and leaves — such as eugenol, vallinin, gallic acid, palmitic acid, oleic acid, and linoleic acid. These compounds are extracted and used to treat many diseases.
Tulsi is known for many health benefits, including helping with ulcers, inflammation, diabetes, arthritis, stress, asthma, and cancer. It also has antioxidant, antimicrobial, pain-relieving, heart-protective, liver-protective, immune-boosting, wound-healing, and anti-aging properties.
