This research investigates the adoption and impact of Digital Transformation (DT) in Local Businesses, particularly Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs). The primary goal was to assess the current state of digital adoption, identify the key drivers and barriers, and evaluate the resulting impact on business performance, customer engagement, and competitiveness.
The study used a positivist paradigm and a deductive survey design to collect quantitative data from a sample of 385 local businesses in India.
Key findings include:
A majority of surveyed businesses (64.6%) use digital technologies. Most adoption is recent; 71.3% of respondents started their digital journey between 6 months and 2 years ago. A significant positive correlation exists: 63.4% of businesses reported that DT improved their performance, and 62% saw a significant increase in online sales. The main metrics for success are Enhanced Online Presence (41%) and Improved Customer Engagement (38%).The major barriers are limited resources, lack of expertise, and uncertainty about Return on Investment (ROI).The study concludes that local businesses must prioritize a formal DT strategy and invest in skills, while policymakers must provide targeted financial and training support to ensure competitiveness.
