Free vs Paid Journal Publication: What Authors Should Know

Authors often search for free paper publication. Publishing is never costless, because editing, hosting and administration all have to be paid for by someone. The real question is who pays, and whether any charge reaches you. This guide explains the common models so you can read a journal’s offer clearly.

Four common funding models

Who pays, and what to check
ModelWho typically paysWhat authors should check
SubscriptionReaders or librariesPage, colour or reprint charges; access to your own article
Open access with an APCAuthors, institutions or fundersAmount, DOI inclusion and timing of payment
Open access with no author feeA society, university or other sponsorSustainability, and whether the journal is selective on the merits
HybridSubscribers, plus an author fee for open accessWhether you are charged twice

Why “free” needs a second look

A claim of free publication is not wrong, but it is incomplete. A journal may be free for the author because someone else pays. It may be free until a separate charge appears for a DOI, a certificate, a page limit or a faster service. Ask for the complete list of charges in writing before you submit.

When a fee is reasonable

  • It is stated clearly and in advance.
  • It is separate from the editorial decision.
  • It is due after acceptance, or the reason for another time is explained.
  • The refund policy is published.
  • The journal answers your questions promptly.

A small, transparent fee at a well-run journal is better than a “free” offer with unclear charges.

Where IJSCI sits

IJSCI is an open-access journal. Its fees are stated per accepted article (₹499 without DOI or ₹699 with DOI for Indian authors, and $20 with DOI for international authors) and are paid after acceptance. See the charges page. If your funder or institution covers publication costs, ask the editor how to arrange an invoice or receipt.

Questions to ask any journal

  1. Is there any charge at submission, acceptance or publication?
  2. Are DOI, page, colour or reprint charges separate?
  3. Who owns the copyright, and what licence applies?
  4. Will the article stay freely available online?
  5. Where is the refund policy published?

Our guide on article processing charges explains the terms in more detail.

Frequently asked questions

Is there really free journal publication?

Some journals have no author fee because a sponsor pays. Always ask for the full list of charges, since extras can appear later.

Is a paid journal better than a free one?

Not automatically. Judge the review process, the editors and the claims you can verify.

Does IJSCI charge a fee?

Yes. IJSCI charges an article processing charge per accepted article, paid after acceptance.
