Low Cost Journal or Questionable Journal? How to Tell the Difference
Authors who search for a low-cost journal are right to be careful. Price is not the problem. The risk is a journal that takes a fee and offers little in return, such as no real review, no named editors or false claims. This guide shows what to check, and it applies to any journal, including IJSCI.
Price is the wrong test
A journal can be inexpensive because it uses online systems, volunteer editors and open-access publishing at a modest scale. Another can be expensive and still be poorly run. Judge a journal by what it does and what you can verify, not by what it charges.
Signals that matter
| Area | Healthy sign | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Peer review | A described process with roles for editors and reviewers | Review is called a formality, or acceptance is promised |
| Fees | Amounts and timing stated clearly | Fees hidden or changed after submission |
| Editors | Named editors you can verify elsewhere | No names, or names that cannot be found |
| Contact | Working email and a stated institution or publisher | Only a web form or a free email with no details |
| Identity | An ISSN you can check and a DOI prefix you can look up | Identifiers that do not match the journal |
| Indexing claims | Claims you can confirm in the named database | Logos with no source, or invented lists |
| Outreach | Targeted, polite invitations, or none | Mass emails with flattery and urgent deadlines |
How to verify any journal yourself
- Check the ISSN on the official ISSN portal and see whether the title matches.
- Search the DOI prefix on Crossref and open a sample article’s DOI.
- Look up two or three editors by name on their institution’s website.
- Read three published papers and judge their quality and their language.
- Read the peer review, ethics and fee pages in full.
- Email the editor a specific question and see how you are answered.
Check IJSCI the same way
IJSCI invites the same checks. Its ISSN is 3049-0251, its DOI prefix is 10.70849/ijsci, its contact is editor@ijsci.com and its fees are stated on the charges page. Read the peer review policy, the plagiarism policy and the abstracting and indexing page, and verify any claim that matters to you in the original source.
If you are unsure
Ask your supervisor, your institution’s librarian or a senior colleague. Check what your institution or funder requires. Our guide on how to choose a journal has a fuller checklist. If a journal pressures you to pay quickly, treat that as a reason to slow down.
Frequently asked questions
Is every low-cost journal questionable?
No. Price alone says nothing about quality. Check the review process, the editors, the identifiers and the claims.
What is the biggest warning sign?
A promise of acceptance or a guaranteed timeline before anyone has read your paper.
Can I rely on a logo showing indexing?
No. Confirm the claim in the named database itself.
How should I check IJSCI?
Verify the ISSN, the DOI prefix, the editors and the published papers, and read the policy pages. Email the editor with any question.
